Throughout a world, Wireless operators are getting ready to replace its services with new high-speed 4G LTE networks they've built during the past couple of years. It was a year of August 2012, when the South Korea and US network carriers became the world's first voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE - voice over lte) providers.
What is VoLTE - (Voice over LTE) ?
VoLTE technology stands for voice over Long Term Evolution. It is a new protocol for transmitting voice data over the LTE network with high-speed wireless communication for data terminals and mobile phones. It is based on the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network, with specific profiles for media planes and control of voice service on LTE defined by GSMA in PRD IR.92
VoLTE is a business necessity :
While 2G and 3G networks are based on circuit-switch, 4G or LTE networks utilize Packet Switching. However a call is made over a 2G / 3G network connection, a certain amount of network bandwidth is assigned to that call as a pipeline, so that one user cannot make or receive calls. But on a VoLTE network, voice calls are divided into packets of information, sent over the full data pipeline and then reconstructed at the receiver’s end. As a result, voice information can be carried over a higher bandwidth pipe, resulting VoLTE can connect calls up to twice as fast as the current methods in better call quality.
VoLTE can connect calls up to twice as fast as the contemporary methods and as 2G / 3G network connections will still be available when there’s no 4G signal it simply means that there’s greater cellular coverage overall, as currently places with a 4G (fourth generation) signal but no 2G / 3G means that one you can’t make or receive calls.
Benefits of VoLTE :
Nowadays, major wireless operators have announced that they are deploying a new voice service (VoLTE) using their 4G LTE network, that will finally replace their existing 2G voice network. According to report, Verizon Wireless is the latest US carrier to announce that its VoLTE network service will be offered nationwide in the coming weeks.
In the long run VoLTE will benefit wireless operators much more than it will be benefited to consumers. The meaning is that, service providers will finally have to control only one network, which is far more efficient, more reliable to deliver voice services than the older 2G voice network. With introduction of VoLTE network, customer need to search for a different signal each time, can improved battery life over other VoIP apps. It also gives more features such as improved coverage / connectivity, Rich Communications Services, High-definition voice (improved voice quality), True device interoperability and a faster call setup times with better quality voice calls.
Where does VoLTE stand ?
Nowadays VoLTE became a big thing in the fast-growing Indian smartphone market that supported VoLTE, a facility that allows users to speak over high-speed data networks. As of now in India, Reliance Industries Ltd’s chairman Mukesh Ambani said in his speech that Mumbai was sharply focused on the performance of newcomer Reliance Jio Infocomm. To begin with VoLTE, it requires the spectrum in the 2,300MHz band. R-Jio partner with an existing player to provide voice services on the Circuit Switched Fall Back (CSFB) option or has spectrum to offer voice services using VoLTE technology on the same spectrum. CSFB is a technology whereby SMS and Voice services are delivered to LTE devices via the use of another circuit-switched network or GSM. CSFB is required because the all IP LTE network can’t support circuit switched calls. According to Counterpoint Technology Market Research, about 2% of the mobile devices in India are VoLTE upgradeable, with a majority of them Apple iPhones.
In May 2014, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd introduced the world’s first full featured VoLTE ecosystem. Moreover, SEATEL Cambodia launched the world’s first commercial 100% VoLTE service without 2G/3G in country in July, 2015. Three months later, Telstra said that it had started to enable VoLTE across its network. The buzz on 5G (fifth-generation) technology is getting powerful. Furthermore, 5G speed is 20 Gbps (gigabits per second), fast enough to download HD movies in a span of seconds and the International Telecommunication Union is still working on 5G standard.
Few Things That You Need to Know About VoLTE:
Initially there are few things - VoLTE only works if both the devices, dialer and receiver support VoLTE (in some implementations), so in the early days you might find yourself quite restricted in terms of who you can actually use it in contact list. Depends on how the Voice over LTE networks set it up there also may or may not be network, so at first, it is possible that you may only be able to use Voice over LTE to call people on the same network as you. Every Phone is not supports to VoLTE network - In terms of iPhone side, only the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus support to VoLTE. On T-Mobile side, there's the Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G Flex Galaxy Light and Galaxy Note 3. On Verizon side, user’s other choices for VoLTE phones include the LG G2 and Samsung Galaxy S5. For now, user required an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus to utilize HD calling on AT&T network.
Some Parts of the US Don't Have VoLTE Yet - T Mobile and Verizon have deployed VoLTE network nationally, but not all of their towers are provided to support it. The carrier hasn't said when it will expand the service and Sprint is not yet offering VoLTE. According to AT&T website, AT&T has only rolled out VoLTE network service in a limited number of markets (mostly in the upper Midwest).
Potentially, VoLTE also requires both participants on the call to have 4G network coverage. As that’s not yet as widespread as 2G / 3G network that means VoLTE calls won’t always be available and if someone moves out of 4G network coverage due to the call there are a chance that the call will be dropped. All of these things are likely to be short-lived though as 4G network coverage increasing, more devices begin to support Voice over LTE. In fact Three’s version of the service (is the only live one in the UK) experiences from very few of these problems, with the only major ones being lack of Voice over LTE coverage and restricted support for existing handsets.
