Broadband Secrets That Your ISP Won't Tell You

Do you think you can trust your ISP? Of course, not! Each one of us has had our share of bad experiences with our ISP. The speeds offered by them are often much slower than advertised, the price is actually more than what you had thought it would be, there's no consistency in the availability of the broadband connection, and the contract means nothing more to your ISP than a piece of paper! Let’s talk a bit more about the broadband secrets that your ISP won't tell you. Be prepared to be shocked!

Here’s the truth about your broadband speed – it’s not nearly as fast as advertised. It’s the dirty secret that is shared by a majority of ISPs around the world – what they promise you and what they actually offer, are completely different. You may have subscribed to a 8 Mbps plan from your ISP, and yet, going by how long it takes to watch a YouTube video because of all the buffering, and how much you have to wait for some downloads to be completed, it seems as though the actual broadband speed is not even a quarter of what has been promised to you. But how can you be sure of this?

Here’s what you should do – check your broadband speed on, the #1 broadband internet speed test online. If the speed on is the same as what is claimed by your ISP, then you can relax. If not, take a screenshot of the broadband internet speed test at and send it by email to your ISP and ask them to explain the discrepancy between what they promise and what they actually offer. Legally, no ISP can mislead its customers, so you have a valid case here.

The Price

The problem with the broadband price is that many ISPs make extra charges that you have little idea about. It’s just that they don’t tell you about it, and bundle the extra charges, such as the line rental, along with the monthly bill. When you get you get your bill, talk to the ISP’s customer support and ask them to explain each and every item on the bill.

What you probably don’t know about your ISP is that you have to share the bandwidth with several other people, around 50 or maybe even more. So during the rush hours, say 7pm to 9pm, when most people use their broadband internet connection speed, the real speed of broadband internet will be really slow, perhaps one-tenth of what is promised by the ISP. So before applying for a new broadband connection, do internet speed test. Thereafter ask your ISP about the connection rate – which is the number of people with whom you will be sharing the bandwidth speed. If it’s too high, choose a different ISP.

Contract Length

There are many ISPs that offer a no-contract broadband, which means you pay as you use, and can disconnect any time you like. This is of a special benefit to tourists who will be at a place only for a few days or weeks and so don’t want a long term contract with a broadband – they are just looking for a fast and reliable internet connection, which can be discontinued any time they wish to. But what you probably didn’t know is that even the no contract broadband connections have a fixed 1-month contract, at least. So you would be required to pay for one month’s charges, at a bare minimum. And if you disconnect within a certain period – say 12-months – you will be asked to pay the connection fee and the modem fee.

Another dirty secret ISPs have is that they may promise a “nationwide coverage” but it is anything but! In fact, even if you live in a major city such as New York or Bangalore, there are certain areas over which your ISP will have no coverage, or they may charge extra to offer coverage in such areas. That’s because when an ISP does not have a presence in a certain area, they provide their broadband service using another network – which is why they charge extra. Ask your ISP to be very clear about the availability of their broadband services in your area before signing up with them.
