8 ways to Speed Up Your Computer

“why is my computer running so slow?” So slow that you feel that your PCs can start to show their age and suffer some wear and tear, you have no choice but to buy a new one? Wait – there are many ways to speed up your computer and they are all a lot cheaper than buying a new laptop or PC.

Usually, windows PCs don’t have to slow down over time. Whether your PC has gradually become slower or it suddenly ground to a halt a few minutes ago, there could be quite a few reasons for that slowness. Don't be afraid! Try these simple tips to speed up your computer and make your old PC feel as good as new...

Run a disk defragment

Disk defragment is a process that reconfigures your hard drive space for maximum efficiency. It’s very simple to run Disk Defragment. Go to “My Computer”. Once there, right-click on the hard-drive you want to reconfigure, select “Properties” and there under the “Tools” tab, select the “Defragment Now” option.

Run disk cleanup

Use a built-in tool available with Windows called “Disk Cleanup” which de-clutters the disk. It goes through the system for any unnecessary files such as program installers, temporary internet files and so on and removes or uninstalls them.

Delete all temporary files

Nothing affects the speed of your PC or laptop as the temp files that collect on the computer during routine everyday tasks and stay on the hard disk even after the task is over. These files slow down the computer. You need to get rid of all temporary files, such as your internet history, cookies and so on. It’s important to have a large amount of free hard disk space for the computer to run smoothly. Use a third-party tool called PC Cleaner for this. It deletes all temporary files automatically without requiring any work from your end. All you have to do is to download and run PC Cleaner.

Install an Additional hard drive

For the computer to run smoothly, it is important that the hard drive should be as free as possible. Now, if the hard drive is 80 percent full even after you’ve deleted all temporary files, the computer isn’t going to get any faster. You need your hard drive to be as big as possible and as free as possible. It should ideally be of size 1TB or more.

Remove Unused Programs

There are several programs on your PC that you probably never use. In fact, you’re probably unaware of the fact that they exist. These programs run in the background when you load the computer and are active even when you don’t use them. Here’s what you should do:

Go to the Control Panel, click on Programs and Features, go through the list of all the installed software. Uninstall the programs that you don’t need. Don’t touch anything that has the PC manufacturer’s name or is listed as a Windows file. Or, you can use third-party tools such as PC Decrapifier to uninstall the programs that you don’t need.

Add more RAM

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is your computer’s temporary storage memory, which it uses when multiple tasks are running on it executed by different programs. The more programs you run at the same time, the more RAM you need. If your RAM isn’t of a sufficiently large capacity, your computer will slow down considerably. When this happens, your computer slows down every time you try to process a large file and will freeze when there are multiple tasks on at the same time. So add on more RAM to your laptop or PC.

Give your computer a static IP

One of the best ways to speed up the computer is to give it a static IP address, one that never changes. That’s because when you start the computer it spends a lot of time looking through the network for an IP address. So if you have a static IP address, the network becomes easier to identify and the computer’s startup time would reduce automatically.

Here’s how to do it. Go to “Network and Sharing Center” -> “Change adapter settings” -> “Properties”. There, highlight the “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and in the “Use the following IP address” enter in the static IP, Subnet mask, and Default gateway that matches the network setup.

Shop for a Faster Internet Plan

Look around for a faster internet plan from your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Not all ISPs offer the same broadband speed as advertised by them. So, find out if your ISP has been misleading you. Just test your broadband speed at DoSpeedTest.com, the best internet speed checker tool out there.
